Prevent electrical accidents

Every year, people are injured in electrical accidents at events, concerts and festivals. These accidents are usually caused by unrecognised insulation faults in the material used.

Movable event technology (equipment, spotlights and cables) is subject to a high degree of wear and tear. Temporarily laid cables are pulled, crushed, driven over and stepped on. This can damage insulation. At outdoor events, weather influences such as sunlight, moisture, rain, snow and puddles also play a role.

If a defective cable is connected to trusses or a stage structure, these can be energised (contact voltage 230 V!) without this being noticed and a residual current device interrupting the power supply. Then it is dangerous for everyone present at the event.

If electrical accidents caused by excessive contact voltages are to be prevented, permanent monitoring of the event technology used for residual currents is necessary.

With a residual current monitoring system from Bender, fault currents can be easily detected. Even small changes in fault currents, for example due to the connection of faulty cables, crushing of cables, failure of devices or changed conditions (e.g. onset of rain at outdoor events), are recognised.

The monitoring system can be set in such a way that an alarm is signalled even for non-critical or harmless fault currents. This gives technicians the opportunity to react to potential problems at an early stage and thus avert dangerous situations. The more detailed the monitoring, the faster the sources of error can be localised.

In this way, electrical accidents at events, concerts or festivals can be prevented.

Benefits for organisers:

  •  Safe detection of fault currents
  •  Avoidance of dangerous situations
  •  Improved protection against the dangers of electric shock
  •  Easy overview of the status of the electrical system

Initial and recurrent tests

Electrical systems must be tested for safety in accordance with DIN VDE 0100 (installation of low-voltage systems) before they are commissioned. DIN VDE 0105-100 (operation of electrical systems) also stipulates regular periodic inspections. These tests are used both for personal protection (protection against electric shock) and for system protection. Neither people nor devices and systems should be damaged by faulty devices.

There is usually not enough time to check. Skilled labour is in short supply. Technicians are often not qualified electricians. They lack an understanding of complex electrical systems. In addition, different configurations are constantly required on set. A solution is therefore required that reduces the effort involved in electrical testing without jeopardising the safety of people and systems.

Continuous residual current monitoring makes it possible to reduce the time and effort required for initial and recurrent tests, while at the same time fully guaranteeing the safe operation of electrical systems. The measurement technology is able to identify faulty

devices and cables during operation and alerts the technicians. Dangerous situations can thus be averted.

Bender Powerscout® software is also available to facilitate system documentation.

    Benefits for organisers:

    •  Reduced effort for initial and recurrent electrical tests
    •  Reduced effort for system documentation
    •  Permanent monitoring of the system status
    •  Permanent protection against electric shock hazards
    •  Permanent system protection

    Note:

The residual current monitoring system from Bender can be integrated into existing event technology.
