Leisure and amusement parks

Prevent electrical fires

In recent years, there have been several fires in leisure and amusement parks. In most cases, electrical faults were the cause of the fire. In any case, the damage is very high. It often runs into millions.

Electrical fires are always caused by fault currents. These are caused by insulation faults in the technology used. Such faults do not usually occur spontaneously, but are the result of material fatigue due to ageing and other environmental influences such as cold, heat, moisture or wetness.

A fault current of approx. 300 mA is sufficient to trigger an electrical fire. Due to the high number of electrical consumers in leisure and amusement parks, very high currents sometimes flow. It is almost impossible to recognise a relatively small residual current here. Specialised measurement technology is therefore required to detect dangerous fault currents and prevent electrical fires and thus high levels of property damage and possibly even personal injury.

Bender residual current monitoring systems detect even small residual currents. Users can define a threshold value that is safe for systems and at which an alarm is triggered (e.g. 30 mA). If this value is exceeded, technicians are informed. This information advantage gives operators and technicians the opportunity to react to faults in the system at an early stage, rectify them and thus prevent electrical fires.

For operators this means:

  •  Fast and reliable detection of fault currents
  •  Prevention of electrical fires
  •  Avoidance of high property damage

Prevention of electrical accidents

Time also leaves its mark on existing and permanently installed systems. Cable insulation becomes brittle, appliances become susceptible to failure. Environmental influences such as solar radiation, heat, cold and moisture are added to this. This reduces the insulation level of the installed cables and devices.

The poorer the insulation level, the higher the residual currents and thus the risk of electrical accidents. This risk is much higher for water attractions and rides.

To prevent electrical accidents, measures must be taken to recognise fault currents before they can become dangerous for people.

Residual current monitoring systems from Bender detect fault currents before they can become dangerous for people. This prevents accidents caused by electric shock.

Operators can set a threshold value for residual currents that is safe for humans (e.g. 30 mA). If this value is exceeded, an alarm is triggered. This gives operators the opportunity to react immediately, rectify the fault in the system and thus prevent electrical accidents.

For operators this means:

  •  Fast and safe residual current detection
  •  Avoidance of dangerous situations
  •  Prevention of electrical accidents

DGUV V3/Simplify recurrent test

According to DIN VDE 0105-100 and DGUV Regulation 3, the safety of every electrical system must be checked regularly. This test serves to protect the system and persons and is intended to prevent electrical accidents or dangerous situations when handling electrical current.

However, carrying out the recurrent tests takes a lot of time. The more complex the electrical system, the longer the test takes. In particular, the prescribed measurement of the insulation resistance (Riso) is very time-consuming, because not only does the entire power supply have to be switched off, but cables and devices also have to be disconnected. Errors can also occur when reconnecting cables and devices.

Theme park and amusement park operators have an interest in ensuring that their rides and attractions are available and not cancelled for days on end. A solution is therefore required that reduces the time and effort required for recurrent testing without jeopardising the safety of the systems and neglecting personal protection.

With a Bender residual current monitoring system, operators of amusement parks, rides and attractions can dispense with time-consuming Riso measurements. This measure also addresses the shortage of skilled labour, as fewer staff are needed for the repeat examinations.

A residual current monitoring system also increases safety for the system and people. This is because instead of testing every four years, the insulation resistance is measured continuously. Faults in cables or devices are thus recognised at an early stage and dangerous situations are avoided.

Bender POWERSCOUT® is available for storing, visualising and documenting the measured values. The POWERSCOUT® measurement logs are also used to document the DGUV Regulation 3 tests.

Benefits for operators:

  •  Less time and manpower required for Riso assessment
  •  Higher availability of attractions/rides
  •  More safety for people and systems thanks to permanent measurement instead of snapshots

Note:

The residual current monitoring system from Bender can be integrated into existing technology.
